The first 3 sessions will be structured, focusing on a different printmaking technique each week. The 4th session will be left open to allow space and time to play and experiment with what has been covered in the previous 3 sessions. During the 4th session I will be there to support and guide you and can also tailored the session to include additional teaching or support.
Inspiration will be taken from natural form and I will bring along reference material and objects to inspire and inform your work. This will include things like botanicals, shells, fruit & veg, bugs and butterflies. You are very welcome to bring along any of your own reference material, including photographs, magazine cuttings or objects.
The focus of this series of workshops is all about play, exploration and trying new things, rather than the final outcome. You will however leave each session with a handful of experimental prints to be proud of. You may also choose to use the 4th session to work on creating a final piece of work.
Along with learning about a number of low tech printmaking processes the sessions are also designed to offer you a slice of time away from your busy schedule to spend some time at a slower pace, immersed in the joy of printmaking. Leave the sessions with your creative cup full to the brim and a feeling of childlike playfulness.
All of the techniques that are covered in these workshops are very accessible and can be done at the dining room table so if you fall in love with any of the processes covered there is no reason why you can’t carry on at home.
The sessions will be held in The Craft Room, Windmill Hill City Farm ( Philip St, Bedminster, Bristol BS3 4EA). Suitable for all levels of experience, from total beginner to experienced artist.
January Course: Thursday evenings 6.00-8.30pm / 16th, 23rd, 30th January & 6th February
Week 1 - Monoprint
During week one we will focus on monoprint. This will be a fun filled and playful session with no expectations & no pressure - just time to lose yourself in the creative process. This workshop will introduce you to a variety of monoprint techniques and focus on the exploration of mark making. The workshop will be full of surprises and happy accidents as we create unpredictable and spontaneous works of art.
What is a monoprint? Monoprinting is an experimental process where the image can only be made once, unlike most printmaking techniques which allow multiple originals. There are many ways to create a monoprint and we will be exploring this playful and spontaneous way of creating artwork.
Week 2 - Paper stencil printing
Following on from week one we will continue to explore monoprinting with a whole session dedicated to printing with paper stencils. Liz will guide you through cutting your own stencils and using them to create gorgeous and richly textured prints.
Week 3 - Linocut stamps
Week 3 will cover an introduction to lino printing. You will be shown how to carve a linocut stamp and use it to print with. You will even have the opportunity to create your very own greeting cards during the session so you can proudly post your design to your loved ones.
Week 4 - Play time
Week 4 is your time to play and experiment. You may wish to focus on and develop one particular technique or you might even have a go at combining a few to create an experimental mixed media print. I will be there to support and guide you as you explore your new printmaking skills.
