Wheal Coates limited edition original Cornwall print is inspired by the striking and serene beauty of the north Cornish coastline. The dramatic ruins of the former tin mine sit on the cliff tops, carpeted with heather and gorse, between Porthtowan and St Agnes just off the winding coastal path. It was on a sunny September afternoon in 2020 when Liz was following the coastal walk between these two places that she captured the photograph used to make the print. Instantly inspired by the beauty of the strong architectural structure, steeped in history, set against the rugged and wild backdrop of open ocean, Liz knew immediately that she would develop the photograph into a print.

It wasn’t until March 2021 that Liz returned to the photograph and began cutting her paper stencils ready to embark on making the print. It was during the process of cutting the stencils that she decided to take on the challenge of making her first edition of original prints using this particular printmaking technique. The technique itself, using hand cut paper stencils and printing rollers to apply layer after layer of ink is a time consuming and tricky way of working. The paper stencils often rip and need repairing and ink notoriously gets everywhere, so to make an edition of originals was by no means an easy challenge to take on, but one that Liz had wanted to try for a long time.

Printing began in June and continued for around a month, slowly and carefully applying the 24 layers of ink that would go on to create the final print. Liz was careful not to rush and make mistakes and to allow some drying time between layers. Although starting out with 12 prints, she knew an edition so big would be a challenge. After losing a few casualties along the way, the small but perfectly formed edition of 8 prints (Liz’s lucky number!) are finally ready to find their new homes.

The print itself is full of texture and detail and will instantly transport you to the winding coastal paths of Cornwall. The couple who can be seen walking in the foreground are ambiguous enough to allow the viewer to perhaps see themselves or their loved ones immersed in the stunning landscape.

Due to the nature of the printing process each print has completely unique marks and textures making each one extra special. The prints are signed, titled and editioned by the artist. You may notice some small ink marks along the edges and back of the paper, this is inevitable when using this particular printmaking process. Liz will always ensure to only edition prints that are not compromised in any way by these marks and hopes you will see them as part of the prints handmade story.

‘Wheal Coates’ was handmade by Liz, founder of Slow Sunday, in her home studio in Bristol. Liz uses a unique papercut stencil and roller print technique to produce her lively and textured prints. The artwork is printed using artist quality inks onto White Fabriano 5 paper (300gsm).

Your print will be carefully packaged with a cardboard backing and placed inside a card backed envelope to ensure it arrives with you safely. The print itself will be wrapped in a bio-degradable and compostable ‘cellophane’ bag which has been made in the UK from vegetable starch. These bags can be placed in either a home or commercial compost bin and will break down to CO2 and water which can then be reused in the ecosystem to make new plants.

A handwritten thank you note will be added to each order and can be customised with your own message if you are buying it as a gift.

Print Dimensions:

A3 (29.7cm X 42cm / 11.7” X 16.5”)
